The Rain and the River
For Ninah Cummer
Nothing needs to be said
Except to look out across this rolling water
And to know that she stood where you stand
and she looked, too.
To know her, to meet soul to soul
Look at this earth, this sky, this river, these stars
And say ‘this is precious beyond price’
We have made a mark
on our century
we have left our finger-lines
in the shore
The rain and the river
are finding their way back to the sea
And in this quest of hers
is that same love, that desire to return home.
From Blue Cypress Lake to Jacksonville
the great river of shadows is marching
across the centuries
The gravestones forget the names
As the earth forgets the faces
But what is remembered here
is that all souls need light and love
To watch the dead weight of progress
falling on the land,
To watch the stars devoured
And offer your hand
To save a portion of the sky
For those who will come after you
Is a love still written on the land today.
Look at this earth, this sky, this river, these stars
And say ‘this is precious beyond price’
There is no better way to remember her
When you stand where she once did
